Week 5 - Term 3
U3A Diary (a summary - details further down)
Last week I raised the matter of the FLU, well this week I am writing my Perspective from a hospital bed, a by-product of my brush with the Flu. So again please heed the warning about spreading the Flu, washing hands, coughing into tissues or your elbow and making sure you dispose of tissues appropriately. Ruth has organised disinfectant wipes for the Computer Room keyboards.
The new chairs have arrived for Room 1 plus a few extra in the AV Room. I am told they look very good and this is our last item in the Campus upgrade, which has taken place over the last eight months. We have found good homes for 16 of the old chairs, but we still have a few remaining. So if you know of a place in need, please let the office know.
Our concert groups are honing their acts and I have been privileged to hear some of them and they are sounding great. I am very much looking forward to the Concert on the 24th August. Our Local State Member Yvette D'Ath has donated a large hamper as our Lucky Door Prize, which is very much appreciated. Have you got your Concert ticket yet?
Your committee has decided to participate in the Redcliffe Festival "What's Cooking in the Gardens" day on Sunday the 3th September. This is the first time not-for-profit organisations have had to pay a fee, a sign of the times, but we think the exposure we will get there will be very worthwhile. Elsewhere in this Communique it shows how you can volunteer to help on the day.
Last but not least please remember that our Campus is CLOSED this Monday 14th August because of the Moreton Bay Regional Council holiday for the Brisbane Ekka.
Myanmar Tour February 2018
Our next proposed U3A Tour will be to Myanmar (Burma) in February 2018. The tour will be for 15 days plus 2 overnight travel days. The Cost of this Tour will be broken into THREE components, Land Costs including Internal Domestic Flights, International Flights and Tipping and Contingency Fund. The Quote I have negotiated (this is for a Minimum of 10 people) for the Land Costs is $3100, (Note this is dependent on no great fluctuations in the Australian $) to this will be added International Airfares of about $950 and Tipping and Contingency Fund $400. Adding up to a Total cost for the Tour of $4450. On top of that you will have to buy a few meals say $150 plus your Spending Money. The $4450 cost includes: Accommodation, All Breakfasts, 12 Lunches & 9 Dinners, Tours & Guides, Land Transportation, Internal Domestic Flights, International Flights and Tipping plus what we call our Contingency Fund.We will be holding a meeting on Thursday 17th August in the MBR (west) room at 1.00PM to explain the tour and see what interest we have in the proposed Tour.Look forward to seeing your there.Tony NobbsTour Co-ordinatorMobile email@example.com

We have TWO EVENTS taking place in August and September, and we are in need of members to volunteer their services please.
Senior's Week Concert – Thursday 24th August
Tickets for the Senior’s Week Concert are selling well. $10 will get you a seat at the Concert, plus we will be providing a delicious light lunch at the conclusion of the Concert.
We have received a beautiful Hamper from Yvette D’ath MP, the State Member for Redcliffe to be offered as our Lucky Door Prize.
We require 2 STAGE HANDS to help out on the concert day. No heavy lifting. Please leave your name and phone number at the office and our Stage Manager Bernadette will contact you.
“What's cooking in the Botanical Gardens” – Sunday 3rd September
We have a stall at this event and we will need Volunteers to come along and spread the word about U3A Redcliffe. Share your enthusiasm, answer enquiries and have a chat with visitors.
There is a roster outside the U3A office so if you can spare an hour between the hours of 9.00am until 3.00pm please put your name down.
Yet again another successful and enjoyable Trivia morning took place during term break. Another is planned for WEDNESDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER and we are taking bookings at the Office. For more than six years the cost per player has been $8. At the last Management Committee Meeting I put forward a motion to increase the cost to $10, due to increasing costs. The Management Committee voted in favour of this increase, so the cost for Trivia will now be $10.Tables of 4 players, with maximum number set at 52 players. Come along to the office, reserve your spot and pay your fee. We can make up a table if you don’t have a team of 4.
Our "Celebrate through Art" exhibition will be open on Wednesday 16th August in the Stage Door Gallery of the Redcliffe Cultural Centre. Come along and have a look at the works of our very talented artists.
Guest Speaker DayOn Thursday 10th August, members received invaluable information from Helen and Kerrie of the Dept of Transport and Main Roads, at their presentation about road rules, older persons driving, major causes of accidents, and the use of mobility scooters.
There were 3 quizzes for U3A members on various road rules, and this highlighted the need for us to keep up to date with changes to road rules. The use of mobility scooters was very topical for us, especially finding out that those people on wheelchairs and mobility scooters are treated as ‘pedestrians’ by the Dept of Transport and Main Roads.
There was plenty of interaction and questions, and those present received brochures as well as some gifts which were very well received. A big thank you to those who attended, and to the Dept of Transport and Main Roads for their presentation.
ALL MEMBERS ARE REMINDED THAT A CURRENT FINANCIAL BADGE IS TO BE WORN WHEN ATTENDING CAMPUS AND CLASSES. PLEASE SIGN THE CLASS REGISTER AND PLACE THE RELEVANT CLASS FEE (in Australian currency) IN THE BOWL.
CARE & CONCERN
At times we are advised that a member has not been enjoying the best of health, perhaps with a hospital stay. On some occasions we have not known of this until much later. If you know of a member who is not well, please let the office team know. There is a book in the office where details can be recorded and our Care and Concern Aide, Shirley Smith will check the book and take appropriate action.
Any member who has anything they would like published, relating to U3A or simply some musings they think will interest our readers, please email to firstname.lastname@example.org or drop a copy into the office, clearly marked "Campus Communique".
