Fourteen new books have been added since the last library news. I have reduced the size of the reference section. A lot of items had been overtaken by time and technology. These books will soon be available to members, look out for a table near the lift soon.
I have been trying to get to the foreign language collection since the start of the new term. At last I have started. The French section is labeled and in order, the German section is next on the list.
Use a blue card now to borrow a foreign language item. Put your name, the name of the item and the date borrowed on the blue card .Please hand this blue card to the office staff. Return the item to the office, the staff will cross off your loan- item returned! There are also blue cards in the office, staff will be happy to do the loan for you. A review of some of the new items (all in 900 war section) BATTLELINES by Scott Bevan. An interesting story of Australian war artists who have shaped how we see war and have immortalised soldiers and battles in paintings. JUNGLE TRACKS, AUSTRALIAN ARMOUR IN VIETNAM by Gary McKay and Graeme Nicholas. SOLDIERS OF THE KOKODA TRAIL by Peter Fitzsimons. Australian history brought to life by a first rate Australian historian. THE SPIRIT OF THE DIGGER by Patrick Lindsay. Through the words and actions of the soldiers themselves, Lindsay brings an extraordinary insight into their lives and spirit. A recent video addition caught the eye of member Ken Passmore, whose review of it follows. If YOU read something good, drop me a review and I will add it to the library news, for members to see.
RAILWAY JOURNEYS - THE VANISHING AGE OF STEAM. A 5 dvd set plus booklet. This is a 10 hour journey through American steam, plus early shots of American diesels. Disc 1 will thrill fans of locomotives. Disc 2 is all historical steam. Disc 3 more steam plus some historical diesels. Disc 4 is steam on the narrow gauge Colorado lines some of which are preserved and still being used. Disc 5 features large Mallets which are articulated.
Whilst it is long(5 dvds) it is well worth the view.
P.S. For Railway Lovers (especially steam) the Puffing Billy railway situated in Gembrook, Victoria has a static Shay, a Climax and two articulated Garrets currently in steam. America now also has refurbished its Big Boy which is also in steam. That’s all for now, happy reading. Julia Lewis - Librarian.
ALL MEMBERS ARE REMINDED THAT A CURRENT FINANCIAL BADGE IS TO BE WORN WHEN ATTENDING CAMPUS AND CLASSES. PLEASE SIGN THE CLASS REGISTER AND PLACE THE RELEVANT CLASS FEE (in Australian currency) IN THE BOWL.
CARE & CONCERN
At times we are advised that a member has not been enjoying the best of health, perhaps with a hospital stay. On some occasions we have not known of this until much later. If you know of a member who is not well, please let the office team know. There is a book in the office where details can be recorded and our Care and Concern Aide, Shirley Smith will check the book and take appropriate action.
