Notes from our President.
U3A Network Qld State Conference
This Thursday and Friday Ruth Northcott, Vice-President, Judith Murphy, Secretary and I attended the Annual State Conference of U3A Network Queensland at Tweed Heads. It was an opportunity for members of your Committee to network with other U3A Committee members, from throughout Queensland, to exchange ideas, that could be helpful in the running of our own organisation in a better and more efficient way. There were several speakers on various subjects “Sharing the Wisdom – Older to the Younger”, “Avoiding Cyber Fraud”, and “Over Sixty and Fabulous” among them. But the most important announcement was that U3A Redcliffe would host the U3A Network Annual Conference in 2018. U3A Redcliffe to Host U3A Network Conference
Your Management Committee was approached by U3A Network Queensland and asked if we would be prepared to step in, at short notice, and host the 2018 Annual Conference. After discussing and looking at the feasibility of taking on such a venture we decided that we could do it and agreed. So, it was announced at this year’s Conference that U3A Redcliffe will be hosting the Conference on Thursday 31st May & Friday 1st June 2018, here in our own Margaret Ball Room. Part of the Conference will include the Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of U3A Redcliffe. We on the Committee feel very excited about hosting the Conference, it will allow us to show off our Campus and the work we do, to between 100 and 120 delegates from all over Queensland. We will be holding a Meeting on Monday 12th June at 10AM to present our proposal for the Conference and answer any questions. This will conclude with a Morning Tea as part of The Cancer Council’s “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” where you can donate towards cancer research, prevention and support service programs. We are looking for a few people to bring a plate to help with the catering, and if attending would you please put your name down on the list at the U3A office, so we can organize the number of chairs required. We hope to see you there.
The Committee would like to thank Cathie & Jim Morrow for the donation of a 50-inch monitor, this has been installed in Class Room 1. Instructional books are becoming harder to acquire, as many are now going down the digital track. Cathie & Jim’s donation has allowed our Tutors to use DVDs and Computer or On-line programs in their Classes, bringing the benefits of the digital world to this class room.
U3A Redcliffe History
Our workshops to compile a History of U3A for our 30th Anniversary have been proceeding slowly but we are getting some good recollections and items from the old days. Robyn Tryhorn, one of our members who was there in the beginning, brought in some old “Collections” booklets from 1992 to 1996 with verses and short stories, very interesting. Here is one that caught my eye, especially with Mothers Days last weekend.
Mother(Just like a piece of furniture) Mothers are a funny lot - full of love and care,But when you come to think of it, they’re like a kitchen chair. They serve a ready purpose, always standing nearGiving warmth and comfort – when life seems cold and drear. They’er steady and reliable, supportive, soft and loyal. They cushion all the hurt and pain that nature will unfoil. You may sit on them or use them or cast them by the way,You may stand on them, abuse them – but they’er staunch and will not stray. In time their legs will wobble, the back will groan and creak,They’ll become a little faded, perhaps a fraction weak.So love them and adore them, handle them with care,You can’t replace your mother – but you can – a kitchen chair! There is a book in the office where details can be recorded and our Care and Concern Aide, Shirley Smith will check the book and take appropriate action.
