U3A Diary (a summary - details further down)
Welcome to Term 2
Hoping you all had a good Easter break and survived the chocolate onslaught. After the disruption of the last two days of Term 1 by Cyclone Debbie, Term 2 got off to a smooth start. We are offering 7 New Classes and the return of 2 other Classes, to make 88 Classes or Activities available for you this term. Again, many thanks to the Tutors who put so much time and effort into providing the Classes for our members.
We had our first 30th Anniversary Book Workshop on Thursday with 4 in attendance. We have some pictures, scrapbooks and other memorabilia which we must process to select item to be included in the final selection for the Book. As the old saying goes, many hands make light work and we could do with a few extra hands. Why not come along next week at Noon on Thursday in the Margaret Ball Room West and give some assistance, it would be most welcome. There are a few old hands who we would like to interview, so anyone who could assist with this, would also be most welcome.
Please don’t forget we will be holding a meeting to organise our concert for Seniors Week. If you would like to be involved, please come along or send a representative from your group. The meeting will be in the Committee Room at 10 AM Thursday 27th April. See you there.
Murphy’s Law was alive and well on the last Thursday and Friday of Term 1. The heavy rain came in through the front windows and the kitchen windows. Our new carpet fared well with us being able to just mop it up. On Friday morning the lift stopped working and then a short time later the power went out.
Brad Chanter sent through a great photo with the caption “Even the rain won’t stop the U3A Mah Jong players” They just moved their tables under the emergency lights and kept playing. The Choir and the String Instrument and Ukulele Beginners classes kept on singing and playing in the AV room with the blinds pulled up. This went on until the batteries in the emergency lights went out, so it was then time to call it a day.Still a few more woes on Tuesday, the printer was performing well and we only had a little over 120 to go when the printer made a very loud screeching noise and we had to stop printing. Service call placed and technician came.Eight hundred and twenty newsletters were posted on Tuesday morning and the balance mailed out on the Thursday. That Murphy’s Law just won’t go away – unfortunately there are some incorrect page numbers in the Index, sorry about that. Judith Murphy, Secretary.
As you can see above the Newsletter with class details has been sent out and any changes mentioned below should also be noted. There are still vacancies in several of the Computer Classes. Come to campus to make a booking.
The Garden Group will change from an FA week to FB with the first meeting on Thursday 27th April.Phone Jackie on 0415 355 733 to obtain address for meeting.
The iPad Group which meets on Monday from 11.00 – 12.30 is a fun way to learn new tricks and tips when using your iPad. Wendy Mealy is the Tutor, give her a call to enquire about joining the class.
Travellers Tales will have the first session of term on Monday 24th April, but will not be held on MONDAY 8TH MAY, the next class after that will be on 22nd May.

Unfortunately the bus trip to the Margaret Olley Gallery planned for the 6th April had to be postponed due to flooding in the area.
All those who were booked for the trip received a phone call in person or were left a message on their answer machine.
We have rescheduled the trip for WEDNESDAY 26TH APRIL and currently we are contacting those members who were booked on the original tour to tell them the alternate arrangements. Time of departure is still 7.30am, so please arrive in plenty of time for the bus to leave on time.
This date has been selected for the replacement date as after that date there will be reduced viewing and refurbishment of the Gallery for a number of weeks. For those members who are unable to go on the new date a refund of the cost will be made.
We still have FIVE seats available for the bus trip on WEDNESDAY 26TH APRIL. If you are interested in coming on the trip please phone the U3A Campus Office on 3284 2687 to indicate your interest and we will get back to you. The cost of $32 includes bus hire, morning tea and entry to the Gallery. Lunch is at your own expense, we will be going to the Cudgen Surf Club at Kingscliffe for lunch or you can bring your own.
Des Jackson will be holding a special presentation titled Google Products on Monday 22nd May,time 1pm to 3pm In the MBR Room
The presentation will be about what products Google develop and it will also concentrate on those that can be used by individuals as opposed to business.
Tutorial videos are included and, as usual, attendees can have a copy of the presentation to study at home.
Google is a very interesting company that has grown to a $350+ billion turnover organisation in the space of about 20 years. You will see that Google is involved in product development in many surprising areas.
